Quick answer: Surah An-Nas (“Mankind”) is the 114th and last surah of the Quran. It has 6 short verses. We ask Allah for refuge in three of His attributes, as the Lord, the King and the God of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer who retreats when Allah is remembered, who whispers in people’s hearts, from among jinn and men. With Surah Al-Falaq, it forms the Mu‘awwidhatayn, the two surahs of seeking refuge.
Transliteration: Qul a‘oodhu bi rabbin-naas. Malikin-naas. Ilaahin-naas. Min sharril-waswaasil-khannaas. Alladhee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin-naas. Minal-jinnati wan-naas.
English meaning: Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, who whispers in the hearts of mankind, from among jinn and mankind.”

The surah repeats “mankind” three times and pairs it with three attributes: Lord (Rabb), King (Malik) and God (Ilah). Scholars explain the order. A Lord looks after you, a King has authority over you, and a God is the one you worship. A person who asks for protection is asking the One who cares for him, controls everything and deserves his worship.
Al-waswas is the one who puts a whisper of doubt, fear or temptation into the heart. Al-khannas means the one who withdraws. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported to have explained that shaytan rests on the heart of the son of Adam, and when he remembers Allah, shaytan withdraws, and when he is heedless, shaytan whispers. This is a reported explanation found in books of tafsir. See our guide on the importance of dhikr.
The whisperer may be from the jinn or from human beings. A harmful friend or a bad influence can also whisper evil. This is why the believer asks for protection from both. Read what the Quran says about jinn in Islam.
Some Companions came to the Prophet ﷺ and said they found thoughts in their hearts that they would not dare to speak. He asked whether they really did find that, and said it was clear faith (Sahih Muslim). The point is that disliking such a thought shows that your belief is alive. A thought is not a sin when you reject it and do not act or speak on it. The Prophet ﷺ also taught seeking refuge in Allah and stopping the thought (Bukhari and Muslim).
If the whispers are constant and cause distress in daily life, speak to a trusted scholar and also to a doctor or counsellor, because both spiritual and health support can help.
