Surah Al-Muzzammil: Meaning, Translation, and Tafsir of Surah 73

Quick answer: Surah Al-Muzzammil (“The Wrapped One”) is the 73rd surah of the Quran, with 20 verses, in Juz 29. It is an early Makkan surah, apart from the last verse, which many scholars say is Madani. It tells the Prophet ﷺ to stand in prayer at night and recite the Quran slowly, warns that a “heavy word” is coming, tells him to be patient with those who mock him, and ends with a gentle relief: recite what is easy, keep up prayer and zakat, give to Allah a goodly loan, and ask forgiveness.

Key Verses With Transliteration and Meaning

This surah has 20 verses, and verse 20 is among the longest in the Quran. This guide gives the central passages with meaning. Read the full surah from a printed mushaf or a trusted app next to this explanation.

Verses 1 to 4: Stand at night and recite slowly

Transliteration: Yaa ayyuhal-muzzammil. Qumil-layla illaa qaleelaa. Nisfahoo awin-qus minhu qaleelaa. Aw zid ‘alayhi wa rattilil-qur’aana tarteelaa.

Meaning: O you who wrap yourself in garments, stand at night, except for a little, half of it, or reduce it a little, or add to it, and recite the Quran with measured recitation.

Verses 5 and 6: The heavy word and the quiet night

Meaning: Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word. Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concentration and more suitable for speech.

Verses 8 to 10: Devote yourself, trust Allah, be patient

Meaning: And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with complete devotion. Lord of the east and the west, there is no god but Him, so take Him as your trustee. And be patient over what they say and part from them in a graceful manner.

Verse 20 (the final part): Prayer, charity and forgiveness

Meaning: And establish prayer, give zakat and lend Allah a goodly loan. Whatever good you send ahead for yourselves, you will find it with Allah, better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Tafsir: The Structure of the Surah

Part 1: The command to pray at night (verses 1 to 7)

The Prophet ﷺ is called by an affectionate title, “the one wrapped in garments.” Most scholars say this refers to the time early in the revelation when he was wrapped in his cloak. Allah tells him to stand in prayer for much of the night and to recite slowly. The “heavy word” in verse 5 is explained as the weight of the revelation and the duties of the message. Night prayer was seen as preparation for carrying that weight. Read about Tahajjud.

Part 2: Devotion and trust (verses 8 to 14)

He is told to devote himself to Allah, to trust Him as his trustee (wakil) and to be patient with those who mock him. Allah warns the deniers with a fire and a chain, and with a day when the mountains turn into heaps of sand. See tawakkul and sabr.

Part 3: A warning and a reminder (verses 15 to 19)

Allah sent a Messenger to the Quraysh as He sent one to Pharaoh, and Pharaoh disobeyed and was seized. The surah asks how they will protect themselves on a day that makes children turn grey. It ends this section by calling the verses a reminder, so whoever wills may take a way to his Lord.

Part 4: The relief of verse 20

Verse 20 says Allah knows that the Prophet ﷺ and a group with him stand for about two-thirds, half or a third of the night. Allah, who measures night and day, knows they cannot count it, so He turned to them with ease and told them to recite what is easy of the Quran. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the obligation was a year of long night prayer and then Allah lightened it (Sahih Muslim). The verse then lists prayer, zakat, a goodly loan and forgiveness. Read about zakat, sadaqah and istighfar.

Reciting Surah Al-Muzzammil: What Is Authentic?

Many Urdu pages say that reciting Surah Al-Muzzammil brings wealth, removes fear, or solves problems. I could not find an authentic hadith that gives a fixed reward or wazifa for this surah. Its sure benefit is in what it teaches: night prayer, slow recitation, trust, patience and charity. If you want to use it for dua, recite it as you would any part of the Quran and ask Allah directly in your own words. See how to make dua.
