The name of the Prophet ﷺ appears in the Quran four times: in Surah Ali Imran (3:144), Al-Ahzab (33:40), this surah (47:2) and Al-Fath (48:29). Surah Muhammad is the only surah named after him. In verse 2, belief in what was sent down to him is named as part of true faith. To honour him with the sunnah of sending blessings on him, read Durood Sharif.
The surah starts with a contrast. Those who reject and hinder others from the path of Allah find their deeds wasted. Those who believe and do good have their misdeeds removed and their condition improved. This sets up the whole surah: faith gives deeds their value.
This part gave the early community in Madinah, who faced armed opposition, guidance on how to act, including the treatment of captives and the promise of Allah’s support in verse 7. Scholars note that rulings about fighting are governed by Islamic law and a lawful authority, not by individuals, and that the passage must be read in its historical setting. The surah also describes Paradise with rivers of water that does not spoil, milk that does not change in taste, a drink delightful to those who drink it, and purified honey.
Some people sat in the Prophet’s ﷺ gatherings and then asked others what he had said, as if they had not been listening. The surah calls them people whose hearts Allah has sealed and warns about hypocrisy. Verse 24 turns to every reader with the question about reflecting on the Quran. Verse 19 gives the remedy: know Tawheed and ask for forgiveness. See istighfar.
Allah says He will test the believers until He makes clear who strives and who is patient. The surah then tells them to obey Allah and the Messenger and not to waste their deeds, warns against giving up and calling for peace from weakness, and ends with a call to spend in Allah’s way. The final verse reminds us that Allah is the Self-Sufficient and we are the needy. Read about zakat and sadaqah.
