Quick answer: The main sone ki dua is “Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya”, meaning “O Allah, in Your name I die and I live.” The Prophet ﷺ said it when he lay down to sleep, and he said “Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur” when he woke up. This post gives both in Arabic, plus the other sleeping sunnahs authentic reports describe.
“Sone” means sleeping in Urdu. Sone ki dua, also searched as dua before sleeping, sleeping dua, or sone se pehle ki dua, is the short supplication a Muslim says as they go to bed. The Prophet ﷺ treated sleep as a small death and a gift returned each morning, and he marked it with remembrance of Allah.
اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا
Transliteration: Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya.
Meaning: O Allah, in Your name I die and I live.
This is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ
Transliteration: Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur.
Meaning: All praise is for Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.
اللَّهُمَّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَكَ
Transliteration: Allahumma qini ‘adhabaka yawma tab’athu ‘ibadak.
Meaning: O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants. It is reported in Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi, with the Prophet ﷺ placing his right hand under his cheek.
بِاسْمِكَ رَبِّي وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ فَإِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَارْحَمْهَا وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا تَحْفَظُ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ
Transliteration: Bismika rabbi wada’tu janbi wa bika arfa’uh, fa in amsakta nafsi farhamha, wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfazu bihi ‘ibadakas-salihin.
Meaning: In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and by You I raise it. If You take my soul, have mercy on it, and if You release it, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants. This is in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
The Prophet ﷺ also taught his daughter Fatimah to say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times before sleeping (Bukhari and Muslim). Our hifazat ki dua collection has more protection supplications.
The Prophet ﷺ advised a person who sees a bad dream to seek refuge in Allah from its evil, spit lightly three times to the left, turn to the other side, and not tell it to anyone (Muslim). A good dream can be shared with those you love.
Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya, together with Ayat-ul-Kursi, the three Quls and the other bedtime supplications.
The Arabic words are what was narrated. You can add your own words in Urdu or English afterward.
Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur.
It is the sunnah. If you cannot, for health or comfort, you are not blamed, and the dua still applies.
Yes. It is short enough to teach early, and children pick it up quickly when the whole family says it together.
A few sentences before sleep, said every night, change how the day ends. Pick one dua to memorize this week, say it tonight, and add one more each week after that.
