Quick answer: The humbistari ki dua is the short dua a husband says before intimacy with his wife: Bismillah, Allahumma jannibnash-shaytana wa jannibish-shaytana ma razaqtana. It is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, and the Prophet ﷺ said that if a child is decreed for them from that union, shaytan will never harm that child. This page explains the dua, its meaning and the related duas for married couples, in respectful and modest language.
Transliteration: Bismillah. Allahumma jannibnash-shaytaana wa jannibish-shaytaana maa razaqtanaa.
English meaning: In the name of Allah. O Allah, keep shaytan away from us, and keep shaytan away from what You grant us.
Source: Narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. The Prophet ﷺ said that if a child is decreed for the couple from that union, shaytan will never harm it.
The hadith says it is said when a person is about to come to his wife, which means before intimacy begins. Scholars add that it is recommended each time, not only when a couple hopes to have a child. If a person forgets at the start, there is no sin and no need to repeat the act, and the person can ask Allah for goodness in the family in other ways.
Amr ibn Shu‘ayb reported from his father and grandfather that the Prophet ﷺ said that when a man marries a woman, he should hold her forehead, say the name of Allah, ask for blessing, and say the following (Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah, graded hasan by many scholars):
Meaning: O Allah, I ask You for her goodness and the goodness You have created in her, and I seek refuge in You from her evil and the evil You have created in her.
Meaning: May Allah bless you, shower His blessings on you, and bring you together in goodness. This is reported in Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi.
The Quran teaches this dua of the servants of the Most Merciful (Surah Al-Furqan, verse 74):
Meaning: Our Lord, grant us from our spouses and our children comfort to our eyes, and make us leaders for the God-fearing.
You can say this dua at any time. For tips on how to ask, read how to make dua.
It is “Bismillah, Allahumma jannibnash-shaytana wa jannibish-shaytana ma razaqtana,” reported in Bukhari and Muslim.
The hadith speaks of the husband coming to his wife. Many scholars say both can say it in the same way as dua, since it is a request for protection for both and for any child. Ask a scholar you trust for details.
It is best to say the Arabic words of the dua, and you can also ask Allah in your own language.
There is no sin in forgetting. Make it a habit so that it becomes natural.
Some reports from the early generations mention that the husband prays two rakats with his wife on the wedding night and asks Allah for blessing. These reports come from the Companions and their students, not from a clear statement of the Prophet ﷺ, so scholars call it recommended by some and not required.
The humbistari ki dua is short, authentic and easy to learn. Teach it to young couples before marriage, and keep dua at the centre of the home.
