Quick answer: Surah Ad-Dukhan (Surah 44) is a Makki surah with 59 verses, found in Juz 25. Its name means “The Smoke”. It opens with the letters Ha Meem, speaks about the Quran being sent down on a blessed night, tells the story of Pharaoh and the Children of Israel, reminds us that the universe was not created in play, and ends by describing the contrast between the tree of Zaqqum and the gardens of the God-fearing. A hadith about reading it on Friday night is widely quoted, but scholars classify it as weak, so read it for its message and not for a promised reward.
The surah is long, so this guide gives its central verses with meaning. Read the full surah from a printed mushaf or a trusted app next to this explanation.
Meaning: Ha Meem. By the clear Book. Indeed, We sent it down on a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn. In it every wise matter is made distinct.
Meaning: We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them in play. We did not create them except with truth, but most of them do not know.
لَا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا الْمَوْتَ إِلَّا الْمَوْتَةَ الْأُولَىٰ وَوَقَاهُمْ عَذَابَ الْجَحِيمِ ﴿٥٦﴾
Meaning: They will not taste death there, except the first death, and He will protect them from the punishment of the Blazing Fire.
فَإِنَّمَا يَسَّرْنَاهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ ﴿٥٨﴾
Meaning: We have made it easy in your tongue so that they may remember.

Most scholars, including Ibn Abbas and the majority of the mufassirun, say the blessed night is Laylat al-Qadr, in Ramadan. This matches Surah Al-Qadr, which says the Quran was sent down on that night. A smaller group, based on a narration attributed to Ikrimah, said it is the middle night of Shaban, but the narrations used for this are weak, and the stronger view is Laylat al-Qadr. Read more in our guides to Laylat al-Qadr and Surah Al-Qadr. Verse 4 is also linked with the idea that Allah’s decrees for the year are made clear to the angels, which connects to belief in Qadr (divine decree).
The surah starts with an oath by the Quran and states that it was sent down as a mercy and a warning. It then speaks to people who doubt while playing with the truth, and mentions a day when the sky brings visible smoke. Scholars differ on this smoke. Ibn Masud understood it as the hunger and drought that struck the Quraysh, who saw smoke-like haze in the sky. Others, including Ali and Ibn Abbas, said it is one of the signs near the end of time. Both views are recorded in classical tafsir.
Allah reminds the Makkans of Pharaoh’s people. Musa came with a clear message, they threatened him, and Allah saved the Children of Israel and drowned Pharaoh’s army. Verse 29 says that the sky and the earth did not weep for them, a way of showing that arrogant people leave nothing behind worth mourning.
The disbelievers say there is only one death and no resurrection. The answer is verses 38 and 39: creation has a purpose, so there must be a Day of Decision. See Surah Al-Qiyamah for more on the Day of Judgement.
The surah describes the tree of Zaqqum as food for the sinner and the safe place of the God-fearing in gardens and springs. It closes by telling the Prophet ﷺ that the Quran was made easy, so wait and see, for they are also waiting.
A hadith in Tirmidhi says that whoever reads Ha Meem Ad-Dukhan in the night will have seventy thousand angels asking forgiveness for him. Imam Tirmidhi himself said its chain is weak, and later scholars also classify it as weak. Another report on Friday night is also weak. A practice should not be built on a weak hadith, but reading the Quran and thinking over its meaning is always good. Authentic Friday practices include reading Surah Al-Kahf and sending Durood.
Fifty-nine verses.
Makki.
Juz 25.
Dukhan means smoke. The name comes from verse 10.
The hadiths about this are weak, so it is not a confirmed Sunnah. The reading itself is still good, as with any part of the Quran.
No authentic hadith gives a special wazifa for this surah. Be careful with claims of that kind.
Surah Ad-Dukhan reminds us that the Quran came as a mercy, that creation has a purpose, and that arrogance ends in loss. Read it with its meaning and let verses 38 and 39 shape how you spend your days.
