Surah An-Nasr: Meaning, Translation, and Tafsir of Surah 110

Quick answer: Surah An-Nasr (Surah 110) is a short Madani surah of 3 verses. It announces Allah’s help and victory, tells the Prophet ﷺ that people are entering Islam in crowds, and ends with a command to glorify Allah and seek His forgiveness. Scholars from the Companions onward understood it as also hinting that his mission was nearing completion.

What Is Surah An-Nasr?

An-Nasr (النصر) means “The Help” or “The Victory”. It is the 110th surah of the Quran and has only 3 verses. It is also called Surah Idha Ja’a, after its opening words. Searches use surah nasr, surah an nasr, and surah nasr meaning, and all refer to the same surah.

Ibn Abbas reported that it was the last complete surah to be revealed (Sahih Muslim). It was revealed in Madinah, late in the Prophet’s life, and reports differ on whether it came after the conquest of Makkah or during the Farewell Pilgrimage.

Transliteration: Idha ja’a nasrullahi wal-fath. Wa ra’aytan-nasa yadkhuluna fi dinillahi afwaja. Fa sabbih bihamdi rabbika wastaghfirh, innahu kana tawwaba.

Meaning: When the help of Allah comes, and the victory, and you see people entering the religion of Allah in crowds, then glorify your Lord with His praise and ask His forgiveness. Indeed, He is ever accepting of repentance.

Verse-by-Verse Explanation

Verse 1: The help and the victory

The surah begins with a promise. When Allah’s help arrives, and the opening (al-fath) with it, the believers will know it came from Him. Most scholars take al-fath to mean the conquest of Makkah, the city that had driven the Prophet ﷺ out.

Verse 2: People entering Islam in crowds

Once Makkah opened, delegations from across Arabia came to accept Islam, often whole tribes at a time. After years of hardship and few followers, this was a very different scene.

Verse 3: The response to victory

The command at the peak of success is not a celebration. It is to glorify Allah, praise Him, and ask for forgiveness. Success is treated as a reason for humility. Our guide on istighfar shows how to make that part of your daily life.

The Hidden Meaning Understood by the Companions

A report in Sahih al-Bukhari tells that Umar ibn al-Khattab asked a group of senior Companions about this surah. Most said it was about glorifying Allah and seeking forgiveness when victory comes. Umar then asked Ibn Abbas, who was still young, and he said it signaled the approach of the Prophet’s death, because once the mission was complete, the end was near. Umar replied that he knew nothing different from what Ibn Abbas had said.

What the Prophet Did After It Was Revealed

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that after this surah was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ would say in his ruku and sujud: “Subhanaka Allahumma rabbana wa bihamdika, Allahummaghfir li”, meaning “Glory and praise to You, O Allah our Lord, O Allah forgive me.” She said he was putting the Quran into practice. This is in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. If you want to learn the other parts of prayer, see how many rakats are in each prayer.

Lessons From Surah An-Nasr

  1. Victory belongs to Allah. The surah says “the help of Allah” before anything else.
  2. Success calls for humility. The answer to winning is praise and forgiveness, not pride.
  3. Repentance is always open. The surah ends with one of Allah’s names, At-Tawwab, the Accepter of repentance. See the 99 names of Allah.
  4. Finish well. A life’s work ends with remembrance. This ties to the importance of dhikr.

Reciting Surah Nasr in Prayer

Because it is short, many people recite Surah Nasr in the second rakat after Al-Fatiha, especially when learning prayer. There is no authentic hadith assigning it a special reward or a fixed time, so treat it as part of regular Quran recitation. Learn Surah Al-Fatiha first if you are still memorizing.
