Surah Alam Nashrah (Ash-Sharh): Meaning, Translation, and Ease After Hardship (Surah 94)

Quick answer: Surah Alam Nashrah, also called Ash-Sharh or Al-Inshirah, is the 94th surah of the Quran. It is a Makkan surah of 8 verses revealed to comfort the Prophet ﷺ. Allah reminds him of the favours He has given (an opened chest, a lifted burden, a raised name), then promises twice that “with hardship comes ease,” and ends by telling him to turn back to his Lord in worship and hope.

Background: Why This Surah Was Revealed

Scholars place this surah in the early Makkan period, when the Prophet ﷺ faced rejection, mockery and pressure. Many mufassirun link it closely with Surah Ad-Duha, which comes just before it and shares the same tone of comfort. Some early scholars even said the two were once read as one unit. There is no single authenticated incident that explains it, so treat any detailed story about its reason with care.

Tafsir: What Each Part Teaches

“Did We not expand your chest?”

Opening the chest means making the heart wide enough to carry revelation, patience and the weight of the message. Some scholars also connect it to the event in which the angels opened the Prophet’s ﷺ chest, reported in Sahih Muslim. Others read it more broadly as peace and capacity of heart. Both meanings fit.

The burden lifted

The word wizr means a heavy load, and verse 3 says it pressed on his back. Scholars explain it as the anxiety of the mission and concern for his people, which Allah eased. It does not mean that he committed major sins.

“We raised your remembrance”

Reports from the mufassirun say this means his name is joined with Allah’s name in the adhan, the shahada and the tashahhud. Every day, millions say “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” See our posts on the adhan and Durood Sharif.

Why “ease” is mentioned twice

Verses 5 and 6 repeat the same sentence. Arabic scholars point out that al-‘usr (hardship) is definite in both verses, so it refers to the same hardship, while yusr (ease) is indefinite and repeated, which they read as two eases. A saying reported from Ibn Abbas and other Companions is often quoted: one hardship will never overcome two eases. Please verify the wording of any quoted report with a scholar before sharing it as a hadith.

“Strive on” and “turn to your Lord”

Verse 7 has several explanations. Some say it means: when you finish your worldly duties, stand for prayer. Others say: when you finish one task, move to the next without idleness. Verse 8 ends with the answer to every difficulty, which is to place hope in Allah alone. This is the heart of tawakkul.
