Quick answer: Surah Al-Kausar (also spelled Al-Kawthar) is the 108th surah of the Quran and the shortest one, with only 3 verses. Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ that He has given him al-Kawthar, an overflowing abundance of good including a river in Paradise, tells him to pray and sacrifice for his Lord alone, and says that the one who hates him is the one cut off from all good.
Transliteration: Innaa a‘taynaakal-kawthar. Fasalli li rabbika wanhar. Inna shaani’aka huwal-abtar.
English meaning: Indeed, We have granted you the Kawthar. So pray to your Lord and sacrifice. Indeed, the one who hates you is the one cut off.

The word comes from kathrah, meaning abundance. Scholars mention two main explanations, and both are authentic:
The gifts mentioned by scholars include the Quran, prophethood, intercession, a large ummah and a name that is raised in the adhan and prayer. See the adhan and Durood Sharif.
Reports in the books of tafsir say that after the death of the Prophet’s ﷺ sons, some Makkan leaders mocked him as abtar, a man with no male heirs and therefore “cut off,” whose name would disappear. The surah answers this. His name and message would remain, and the one who attacked him would be the one forgotten. The details of who said it differ between reports, but the point of the surah is clear.
The sentence starts with emphasis (inna) and uses the past tense, so the gift is already given. It was said at a time when he was being mocked. Allah responds by describing a gift that is greater than anything his enemies had.
The “so” links the command to the gift. The right response to generosity is worship. “Pray” points to salah. “Sacrifice” (wanhar) is explained by most scholars as sacrificing an animal for Allah alone, which connects it to Eid al-Adha and the rites of Hajj. Read Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha and Hajj in Islam. A few early scholars explained it as raising the hands in takbir or standing in prayer, but sacrifice is the most widely accepted meaning.
Verse 3 reverses the insult. Al-abtar is the one who is cut off from good and from remembrance. Years later, the names of those who mocked him are mostly forgotten, while the name of the Prophet ﷺ is called out five times a day.
Because it is so short, it is one of the first surahs children learn, and many people recite it in salah. Learn the tajweed from a teacher or a trusted recording. There is no authentic hadith that assigns a special wazifa or number of recitations to this surah, so be careful with claims of that kind.
Three verses. It is the shortest surah of the Quran.
Most scholars say Makkan. Some say Madani, so scholars differ.
It means great abundance. It is also the name of a river in Paradise that Allah promised the Prophet ﷺ.
Most scholars say it means to sacrifice an animal for Allah.
Juz 30.
Surah Al-Kausar is three verses long, but it contains a promise, an instruction and an answer to hurtful words. Read it with its meaning and ask what you can do in thanks for what Allah has already given you.
